Hi It’s Tosi here,
Spring is in the air and my oldest daughter just turned 7. I think back to the pregnancy, delivery, labor pain, happiness, weight gain, and I think to myself, Woo Hoo…that stage is over :-).
When I saw the headlines about Actress Halle Berry, who is 46 years old and pregnant with her second child, I was happy. I felt Halle’s pregnancy helps remove the age limits put on when women should become Moms. Is there really a age to stop trying for a baby when you really want one?
As one ages, the difficulties with getting pregnant increase, so when a woman over 40 conceives, shouldn’t that be a period of elation? However, with all rewards come risks. Women under 40 are 75% less likely to have a miscarriage than women over 40. Women over 35 are at a higher risk that their child may be born with chromosome abnormalities, such as Downs Syndrome. Should these risks stop your dreams of having a child once you reach a certain age?
I deliberately did not answer the questions, because the answers are not black and white. There is a definite gray area. There are so many benefits to having a child that each situation has to be looked at differently. I just advice women and men to talk to their Doctors and get as much information as possible.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic, please add a comment below.
